Holika Dahan will be celebrated on 28 March. On this day it is a tradition to burn our evil in the form of wood so that our souls become pure. Usually people burn Holika with any wood on this day which is not right. Jyotirvid knows from Kamal Nandlal that on which days Holika Dahan can be burnt and which wood should not be used in Holika Dahan.

Holika is the festival of burning and incinerating. Mahadev consumed his evil 8 days before Holi i.e. on the day of Holashtak i.e. Kamadeva. According to the scriptures, some trees related to Rahu-Ketu are considered to be a symbol of evil. Therefore, the wood of these trees should be burnt in Holika Dahan.

In Holika Dahan, such wood should be used to burn the evils of our lives. The first wood is castor wood while the second wood is cluster wood. Both these wood must be used on the day of Holika Dahan. Apart from this, cow staples are used on this day.

In this season, the leaves of castor and sycamore begin to fall. Their water element is exhausted. If they are not burnt, then insects are produced inside them.

Burning castor and sycamore wood purifies the air as well as mosquitoes and bacteria. Therefore, on the day of Holika Dahan, both these wood should be burnt with cow's stems and weeds. Mango wood should never be burnt on the day of Holika Dahan.

New copal also comes on peepal tree during this season. Therefore, peepal wood should not be burnt on this day. Apart from this, burning of vat wood in Holika Dahan is also considered inauspicious. Burning wood of these four trees should be avoided in Holika Dahan.
