Congress President: Today is a historic day for Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress. Kharge took oath as the President at the Congress Headquarters in Delhi today. Newly elected Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was formally handed over the election paper on Wednesday and with this he assumed office. The party's Central Election Authority chief Madhusudan Mistry handed over the election certificate to Kharge. On this occasion, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, members of the Central Election Authority Rajesh Mishra, Arvinder Singh Lovely and Jyoti Mani were also present on the stage. Apart from these, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, members of Congress Working Committee, President of State Congress Committees and many other party office-bearers were present in the program.

Kharge pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi before taking charge

Before assuming office, Kharge paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. He also paid tributes to former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

Hailing from the Dalit community, 80-year-old Kharge had defeated his rival Shashi Tharoor, 66, in the historic election held on October 17. The election for the post of president was held for the sixth time in the party's 137-year history. In this, after 24 years, someone outside the Gandhi family was elected the President of the Congress.
