In a significant political development, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, has initiated a massive organizational reshuffle within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). This strategic move involves major changes in the leadership of the party's youth and women's wings. According to reports from PTI, these changes have been implemented at a time when internal dissatisfaction and political turmoil have intensified within the TMC following the party's defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The restructuring is seen as an attempt to consolidate power and address the growing dissent among the party ranks.
Major Changes in Youth and Women Wings
According to party sources, Mamata Banerjee had recently reappointed MP Sayoni Ghosh as the President of the TMC Youth Wing just last week as part of a broader organizational restructuring. However, in a surprising turn of events, she has been removed from the post within a week of her reappointment. Arnab Banerjee has now been named the new President of the Youth Wing, while similarly, the party has removed Mala Roy, the MP from Kolkata South, from her position as the President of the women's wing, known as the Trinamool Mahila Congress. In her place, Alifa Ahmed, the MLA from Kaliganj, has been appointed as the new President of the women's wing.
Rebellion Within the Ranks
The removal of Sayoni Ghosh and Mala Roy has sparked intense speculation within the party. Reports suggest that both leaders have aligned themselves with a rebel group of TMC MPs in the Lok Sabha. This dissident faction has openly challenged the party leadership and is reportedly preparing to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday. The group intends to seek formal recognition as the 'real TMC' within the Parliament. These dissatisfied MPs claim that out of the 28 Lok Sabha MPs belonging to the TMC, approximately 20 are part of their faction, including Sayoni Ghosh and Mala Roy.
Internal Conflict and Harsh Remarks
The internal rift within the Trinamool Congress appears to be widening. A senior Rajya Sabha MP, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated that these organizational changes were finalized during a party meeting held three days ago. The MP made a sharp comment regarding the 20 rebel MPs, stating that Mamata Didi raised people by feeding them milk and bananas, but they turned out to be snakes. Meanwhile, rebel TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has claimed that once their group receives official recognition, they might consider supporting the BJP-led NDA in the Parliament.
Previous Organizational Restructuring
It's noteworthy that this isn't the first time Mamata Banerjee has overhauled the party structure recently. On June 5, she dissolved all TMC committees and frontal organizations across the state to create a new organizational framework. During that period, several veteran leaders and loyalists were assigned new responsibilities, while as part of that reshuffle, her nephew and Diamond Harbour MP, Abhishek Banerjee, was reappointed as the National General Secretary of the party.
Shift in Kolkata Leadership
In the latest round of changes, TMC MP Kunal Ghosh has been appointed as the President of the North Kolkata organizational district. This position was previously held by Sudip Bandyopadhyay. Kunal Ghosh mentioned that the party entrusted him with this responsibility in light of recent developments. It's important to note that Sudip Bandyopadhyay reportedly joined the rebel faction on Saturday. Plus, veteran MP Saugata Roy has been appointed as the Chief Advisor of the TMC's Lok Sabha unit. Currently, only 8 MPs within this unit are said to remain loyal to Mamata Banerjee.
