Morena Chambal River Crisis: Over 100 Lives at Risk as Steamer Drifts

A critical situation has emerged in the Chambal River within the Morena district, where a steamer carrying more than 100 passengers has suffered a mechanical failure and is now drifting uncontrollably in the powerful river currents. The incident has placed the lives of over 100 individuals in immediate jeopardy as the vessel continues to be swept away from its intended course. In addition to the large number of people on board, the steamer is also transporting more than 50 two-wheeler vehicles, which adds significant weight and complicates the drifting situation.

Timeline of the Incident

According to reports, the incident began today morning at approximately 9:30 AM. The steamer had set off from the Nagra Sahaspura Ghat, located in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, with the intention of crossing the river to reach Kela Ghat in Uttar Pradesh. The journey started normally, but as the vessel reached the middle of the river's main stream, the engine suddenly ceased to function. The sudden breakdown left the steamer at the mercy of the Chambal River's fast-moving waters.

Drifting Towards the Uttar Pradesh Border

Once the engine failed in the middle of the stream, the strong current began pushing the steamer downstream, while the vessel has already moved past the territorial limits of Morena district and is reportedly drifting towards the Bhind district and the border of Uttar Pradesh. The operators of the steamer made several desperate attempts to repair the engine and restart the vessel while it was in motion, but they were unable to achieve success. The lack of control over the vessel's movement has led to a state of extreme panic among the passengers.

Panic and Communication from Passengers

The atmosphere on the drifting steamer is one of fear and uncertainty. Several passengers have used their mobile phones to contact their family members and relatives, informing them of the dire situation. They reported that they're helplessly drifting with the current and are unable to reach the shore. This has caused immense distress among the families of those stranded. While some passengers have suggested that the engine stopped because the steamer ran out of diesel, there has been no official confirmation of this claim yet. The primary concern remains the safety of the 100 plus passengers and the 50 plus motorcycles currently trapped on the river as the vessel continues its uncontrolled journey towards the UP border.
