In Sanskrit, Kushmanda means “pumpkin,” and as pumpkin offerings are especially dear to the goddess, she came to be known by this name. Her vehicle is the lion, and because she has eight arms, she is also called Ashtabhuja Devi. In her seven hands, she holds a water pot (kamandal), bow, arrow, lotus, a pitcher filled with nectar, a discus (chakra), and a mace (gada). In her eighth hand, she carries a rosary, believed to contain all perfections (siddhis) and treasures (nidhis).
The Legend of Maa Kushmanda
According to sacred texts, when the three supreme deities (Trimurti) began the creation of the universe, it was filled only with darkness and silence. At that moment, Maa Durga manifested as Kushmanda and, with her gentle smile, radiated light across the cosmos, bringing creation into being. It is believed that she is the only goddess who resides in the Sun’s realm. By her grace, a devotee attains the supreme state. Even a little devotion and service please her, and she removes the sufferings of her worshippers.
