Punjab | After the defeat of the Congress in the Punjab Assembly elections, the round of meetings has started. On Saturday, 24 leaders including former state president Navjot Singh Sidhu met at Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district. The leaders say that the meeting was held as part of an effort to rebuild the party in the state. The Congress, which was in power in the recently concluded elections, got only 77 out of 117 seats.

According to the Indian Express, MLA Sukhpal Kheda, who attended the meeting, said it was an attempt to rebuild the party. After the defeat in the assembly elections, Congress leaders are expressing their desire to make Kheda the leader of the opposition. Whereas, some leaders say that Sidhu should be appointed as the chief of Punjab Congress.

A former MLA told the newspaper that during the meeting, discussions were held regarding the election defeat and future plans. Also agreed to make Kheda the leader of the opposition and Sidhu as the chief of Punjab Congress due to his clean image. "We know the party will take future decisions on merit and honesty with a mandate of change," Khera tweeted.

Khera said that 24 "like-minded" Congress leaders held a meeting at the residence of MLA Navtej Singh Cheema in Sultanpur Lodhi. The meeting was attended by MLAs, former MLAs, candidates for 2022 elections and former presidents of Punjab Congress Committee. After the meeting, Sidhu tweeted, "We will fight for the rights of Punjab with good thinking and seriousness."
