Former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Sidhu has filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court. In this, Sidhu has sought one week's time to surrender. Sidhu has cited being ill for this. The bench, which sentenced Sidhu in this case, has refused to hear the curative petition. On the petition of Sidhu's lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Justice AM Khanwilkar said that we are sending the matter to the Chief Justice, he will decide to hear it. However, if there is no relief from the Supreme Court, then Sidhu will have to surrender today.


The Supreme Court on Thursday extended the sentence of Sidhu by one year in the 34-year-old road rage case. At the same time, supporters have been called at the time of Sidhu's surrender. Patiala District Congress President Narinder Pal Lali has also sent a message to the party workers in this regard. Sidhu is currently present in his Patiala house. Where his supporters have started reaching Congress leaders.


Orders will reach the sessions court from the High Court

The Supreme Court's order to sentence Sidhu to one year's rigorous imprisonment will first reach the Punjab and Haryana High Court. From there he will be sent to the District and Sessions Court of Patiala. If Sidhu himself surrenders, then the police station concerned will be asked to arrest him.


Victim's family said - we are satisfied

The family of the deceased Gurnam Singh said that they are satisfied with the decision. His daughter-in-law Parveen Kaur said that his morale was never broken in 34 years of fighting. He never paid attention to Sidhu's reputation as a cricketer and leader. Their only aim was to get Sidhu punished. in which he was successful.


when what happened

On 27 December 1988, Sidhu had a fight with 65-year-old Gurnam Singh over parking in Patiala. Sidhu punches him. Later Gurnam Singh died. A case of culpable homicide was registered against Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Singh.

  • In 1999, the sessions court acquitted Sidhu for lack of evidence. The aggrieved party moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court against it.
  • In 2006, the High Court sentenced Sidhu to three years' imprisonment and a fine of one lakh rupees.
  • Sidhu surrendered in court in January 2007. In which he was sent to jail. Sidhu then went to the Supreme Court.
  • On 16 May 2018, the Supreme Court acquitted Sidhu under section 304IPC on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. However, IPC section 323, i.e. in the case of causing hurt, imposed a fine of one thousand. Against this the victim's family filed a review petition in the SC.
  • On 19 May 2022, the Supreme Court, changing its decision on Sidhu, sentenced him to one year imprisonment for 323IPC i.e. for causing hurt.
