The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has officially announced an upward revision in the prices of the FASTag annual pass for commuters traveling on national highways. According to the latest notification, the cost of the annual pass has been increased by ₹75. Currently priced at ₹3,000, the new rate of ₹3,075 will come into effect from April 1, 2026. This adjustment is part of the periodic review of toll-related services managed by the authority.
The FASTag annual pass is a prepaid tolling solution introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to facilitate frequent travelers. It allows vehicle owners to pay a lump sum amount in advance instead of maintaining a balance for individual toll transactions. The pass remains valid for a duration of one year or until the vehicle completes 200 toll plaza crossings, whichever occurs earlier. This system was designed to streamline highway travel and reduce congestion at toll collection points.
Details of the Price Revision and Implementation
According to NHAI officials, the revised pricing of ₹3,075 will be strictly implemented starting from the next financial cycle beginning April 1, 2026. Until the implementation date, commuters can continue to purchase or renew their annual passes at the existing rate of ₹3,000. The ₹75 hike is intended to support the operational maintenance of the digital tolling infrastructure. The authority has clarified that the pass is linked to the specific FASTag ID of the vehicle and can't be transferred to another vehicle.
Eligibility and Vehicle Categories
The FASTag annual pass facility is exclusively available for private vehicles, categorized under the M1 class, which includes cars, Jeeps, SUVs, and vans. Commercial vehicles, including trucks and buses, aren't eligible for this specific annual pass scheme and must follow the standard tolling procedures. The pass is valid across approximately 1,150 toll plazas situated on various national highways and expressways across the country. This pan-India validity ensures that travelers don't need to purchase separate passes for different states or highway stretches.
Regulatory Framework and Usage Statistics
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) stated that the price hike has been executed under the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules 2008. These rules empower the authority to adjust fees based on various economic and operational factors. Data released by the ministry indicates a significant adoption of the annual pass system, with over 56 lakh users having utilized the service to date. The government continues to emphasize the transition toward a completely cashless tolling ecosystem to enhance logistics efficiency.
Benefits for Frequent Highway Commuters
The primary advantage of the FASTag annual pass is the convenience of easy movement through toll plazas. By opting for this pass, drivers avoid the necessity of monitoring their FASTag balance frequently or dealing with transaction failures at toll booths. Since the system utilizes Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, the toll gates recognize the valid annual pass automatically, allowing for faster throughput. This contributes to significant savings in travel time and fuel consumption, particularly for those who commute regularly between cities.
Procedure for Purchase and Activation
NHAI has streamlined the process for acquiring the FASTag annual pass through digital platforms. Commuters can apply for the pass using the 'Rajmarg Yatra' mobile application or by visiting the official websites of MoRTH and NHAI. The applicant is required to enter their vehicle registration details and the active FASTag ID. Payments can be made through multiple digital modes, including Net Banking, UPI, and Credit or Debit cards. Once the payment is processed, the annual pass is electronically linked to the vehicle's FASTag, and a confirmation is sent via SMS to the registered mobile number.
