Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has issued a stern rebuttal to Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif regarding his provocative statements about targeting Indian cities like Kolkata. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Abdullah highlighted the disparity between Pakistan's rhetoric and its actual military and economic capabilities, while he advised the neighboring nation to address its internal instability rather than issuing empty threats against Indian territory.
Khawaja Asif's Provocative Remarks on Kolkata
The controversy stems from a statement made by Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif on April 4, where he claimed that any future conflict wouldn't be confined to the borders but would reach deep into the Indian heartland. Asif specifically named Kolkata as a potential target. He further alleged, without providing evidence, that India might orchestrate a 'false flag' operation to frame Pakistan for terrorism. He asserted that if such an incident occurred, Pakistan's response would extend as far as Kolkata.
Reminder of Operation Sindoor and Military Reality
Responding to these claims, Omar Abdullah reminded the Pakistani leadership of 'Operation Sindoor', which took place last year. He pointed out that despite their tall claims, Pakistani forces were unable to reach the national capital, Delhi, during that period, while abdullah noted that they barely managed to reach parts of Jammu and failed to inflict any significant strategic damage. He emphasized that for a country that couldn't breach the defenses of the capital, dreaming of reaching Kolkata is a complete detachment from reality.
Pakistan's Economic and Fuel Crisis Highlighted
Abdullah also drew attention to the dire economic situation in Pakistan, particularly the ongoing fuel crisis. He contrasted India's strong aviation and energy sectors with Pakistan's struggles, noting that international airlines have been asked to carry their own fuel when flying to Pakistan because the country can't provide it. He suggested that instead of focusing on distant Indian cities, the Pakistani government should prioritize providing basic resources like fuel and stability to its own citizens.
Advice on Improving Bilateral Relations
The Chief Minister stressed that it's in Pakistan's best interest to seek an improvement in bilateral relations with India. He argued that the negative impact of strained relations is felt much more severely by Pakistan than by India. Abdullah urged the Pakistani leadership to move away from a policy of confrontation and instead focus on dialogue and internal reform. He stated that the path of escalation only leads to further isolation and economic hardship for the people of Pakistan.
Background of Operation Sindoor
Operation Sindoor was a retaliatory military action launched by India following a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists. In response, the Indian Army conducted precision strikes using missiles and drones against terrorist launchpads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation successfully neutralized over 100 terrorists. While Pakistan attempted to retaliate with cross-border shelling and drone incursions, these attempts were largely ineffective against India's defensive posture.
