ups and downs of state power

Uttarakhand, which came into existence as the 27th state of the country on November 9, 2000, has got 12 chief ministers so far. In the year 2000, BJP got the opportunity to form the first interim government and Nityanand Swami became the first Chief Minister. Swamy died in October 2001 before the completion of his one-year term and Bhagat Singh Koshyari was made the CM in his place. Koshyari got a tenure of only about four months as the BJP was ousted from power in the first assembly elections held in early 2002.

Tiwari became CM from Congress

Narayan Dutt Tiwari became the third Chief Minister of the state when Congress came to power. Tiwari is so far the only Chief Minister who has completed five years in office. In the second assembly elections of the year 2007, again the BJP got a chance to form the government. BJP made the then MP Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri the Chief Minister but after two and a half years in June 2009, Khanduri was removed and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was crowned as the Chief Minister. Nishank also got a chance to stay in this post for about two and a half years and in September 2011, Khanduri was again handed over the command of the government by the BJP.

Congress got power again

Congress came to power in the third assembly election of 2012. The Congress also made an MP Vijay Bahuguna the Chief Minister instead of the MLA. Bahuguna was in the chair from March 2012 to January 2014. He had to step down due to infighting in the Congress and Harish Rawat became the Chief Minister in February 2014.

BJP came to power

In the fourth assembly election of the year 2017, the Congress was parted from power and then the BJP got the opportunity. This time BJP handed over the chief minister's chair to MLA Trivendra Singh Rawat in March 2017. On March 9, 2021, just days before completing his four-year term, Trivendra had to lose the chief minister's post following unexpected developments. On March 10, Tirath Singh Rawat became the 10th Chief Minister of the state and he died in just 114 days. After this, Pushkar Singh Dhami was crowned as the 11th CM.
