India-US Tariff War: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that Modi is unable to stand up to the threats of US President Donald Trump. The reason for this is the ongoing investigation in the US against the Adani Group, which has tied Modi's hands. Rahul claimed that Modi's relationship with Adani and Ambani (AA) has now become public.Last year, 8 people including Adani were accused of fraud worth billions of rupees in the US. According to the US Attorney's Office, Adani's company acquired renewable energy projects in India in an illegal manner. Government officials were bribed for this. The investigation of this case is still going on, which has raised questions on India-US relations.Rahul's attack on Trump's claimsRahul Gandhi surrounded the Modi government citing Trump's recent statements. He questioned the government's silence on two key issues:July 31: Rahul's statement on Indian economyRahul took a dig at Trump for calling the Indian economy a "dead economy". "I am happy that Trump spoke the truth. The whole world knows that the BJP ruined the Indian economy to help Adani," he said. Rahul further said that everyone except Modi and the Finance Minister knows that India's economy is dead.July 28: Debate on Operation SindoorDuring the discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha, Rahul said, "Trump claimed 29 times that he stopped the war. If PM Modi has the courage, he should say in the House that Trump is lying." He also said that if Modi has even 50% of the courage of Indira Gandhi, he should clarify that not a single fighter jet of India was shot down in Operation Sindoor. Rahul alleged that Modi is misusing the armed forces to save his image, which is dangerous for the country.Trump's tariff pressureTrump said on August 5 that he would impose heavy tariffs on India within 24 hours. Earlier on July 30, he announced a 25% tariff on India. Trump alleges that India is promoting the Russian war machine against Ukraine by trading with Russia. He also said that India is buying cheap oil from Russia and selling it in the open market, due to which it does not care about the genocide happening in Ukraine.India-Russia oil tradeBefore the Ukraine war, India used to import only 0.2% (68 thousand barrels per day) of oil from Russia. By May 2023, it increased to 45% (20 lakh barrels per day). From January to July in 2025, India bought 17.8 lakh barrels of Russian oil per day. In the last two years, India has imported Russian oil worth more than $ 130 billion (Rs 11.33 lakh crore) every year.
