In a major leadership transition for Indian cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially appointed star batsman Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of the Indian T20 international team. Iyer takes over the mantle from Suryakumar Yadav, signaling a fresh direction for the squad in the shortest format of the game, while the announcement has sparked significant interest, especially as Iyer prepares to return to the T20 fold after a hiatus from the national side since late 2023.
Authenticity and Leadership Philosophy
Following the announcement of his captaincy, Shreyas Iyer shared his thoughts at an event in Mumbai, where he displayed a firm and grounded attitude toward his new role. He made it clear that while the responsibility of leading the national team is immense, it won't force him to change who he's as an individual. Iyer stated, "I don't need to change my personality. I've to remain the same person I was before. " This statement reflects his commitment to the authentic style that has defined his career thus far.
The Influence of Mumbai's Competitive Cricket
Iyer attributed much of his mental toughness and approach to his upbringing in Mumbai, a city renowned for its deep-rooted cricket culture and intense competition. He explained that challenges have been a constant part of his life since childhood, while "I've always liked challenges. The level of cricket in Mumbai is very high, and the competition is extremely tough. There, every second child dreams of representing Mumbai," Iyer remarked. He emphasized that his mindset has always been focused on fighting through difficulties and emerging victorious, a trait he developed while navigating the high-pressure environment of Mumbai's local cricket scene.
Embracing the Challenge of Captaincy
For Shreyas Iyer, the role of captain isn't just a title but a significant challenge that he's eager to accept. He noted that his philosophy revolves around continuous learning and maintaining a competitive spirit. "My thinking has always been to fight and win against whatever difficulty comes my way. Learning new things and winning matches is important in its own place, but enjoying the game and having the passion to compete takes you very far," he said, while he added that when a major responsibility like captaincy is offered, it should be accepted with joy, describing the current opportunity as a "very big challenge" that he's ready to tackle head-on.
Return to International T20s and IPL Track Record
Iyer's first assignment as the full-time T20 captain will be the upcoming two-match T20 series against Ireland. This marks a significant comeback for the batter, who played his last T20 international in December 2023. Since then, he had been out of the T20 squad, but his recent performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have reinforced his credentials as a leader. Over the last 3 years, Iyer has excelled both as a captain and a batsman in the IPL. He famously led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the championship title in 2024. In 2025, under his leadership, Punjab Kings managed to reach the final. During that season, Punjab performed exceptionally well in their initial 7 matches; however, they faced a string of losses later on and ultimately couldn't secure a spot in the playoffs, despite the early momentum.
