The Indian team has had a pretty good 2019 as they remained unbeaten in Tests and won all seven of their matches under the ICC Test Championship banner and have 360 points so far. In the limited-overs, they reached the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup 2019. They also won the ODI series in New Zealand and defeated West Indies and Bangladesh at home in white-ball cricket.

Rohit Sharma proved to be their trump card in the white ball and red-ball cricket. He scored a record five centuries at the ODI World Cup last year before making a successful return to Test cricket where he was promoted to open the innings. He slammed 2442 runs at the top this year which included a double ton against South Africa and twin centuries against the same opposition in one match itself. As India looks towards a new year in which they will aim at winning an ICC trophy in Australia.

“Shreyas Iyer knows he will bat for long at No.4”: Rohit Sharma

The Indian limited-overs vice-captain spotted a special player who might help India in achieving their dream of another ICC trophy, given their last such triumph came way back in 2013, under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Rohit Sharma felt that Shreyas Iyer, who has been given a long term at no.4 spot, will keep it his for a long time to come.

He feels that his fellow Mumbaikar has the credibility to make this spot his own. “Shreyas knows that he will now bat at No.4 for years to come. He feels secure and can now execute his plans freely. The other guys will first need to make the respective spots their own. KL has had a good time and will go in with a good mindset moving forward. We can’t really judge them as a group after two or three matches. We need to wait till they have played sufficient matches together,” the right-hander was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

He felt the team is gelling well with Iyer, Dube, Pant and KL Rahul coming into their own in the past few matches and as they continue to play together, they will gain confidence and do wonder for the team going forward.

“The problem is that between KL (Rahul), Rishabh, Shreyas, and Shivam, they haven’t played many matches together as a team. But that will happen now and once that happens, they will get some confidence. Things are changing now. Shreyas (Iyer) is No.4 now and he is doing pretty well. Rishabh (Pant) did well in the West Indies ODIs. Shivam (Dube) has started doing well. So, I am confident, our youngsters will step up,” Rohit added.
