In a significant development within the corridors of the Indian Parliament, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has officially sanctioned the merger of 6 Members of Parliament from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction into the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This decision comes as a major boost to the Shinde-led faction, solidifying its presence in the lower house. Simultaneously, the Speaker has also addressed the internal shifts within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Following a split in the party, 20 MPs who moved away from the TMC and joined the National Citizens Party of India (NCPI) have been granted permission to sit separately in the Lok Sabha, marking a formal recognition of their new political identity.
All-Party Meeting and Parliamentary Preparations
Ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju has taken proactive steps to ensure smooth legislative proceedings. He has extended an invitation to the rebel Trinamool Congress leader and MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, along with 19 other Lok Sabha MPs, to participate in the general all-party meeting scheduled for Sunday. This meeting is a traditional precursor to the session, aimed at discussing the legislative agenda and ensuring cooperation between the government and various political factions.
In his formal communication, Kiren Rijiju noted that Sudip Bandyopadhyay and 19 other MPs recently joined the NCPI and had already submitted a request to the Honorable Lok Sabha Speaker for formal recognition, which was under consideration. The Minister expressed his pleasure in inviting them to the meeting of floor leaders of political parties in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The primary objective of this gathering is to deliberate on essential issues and legislative tasks that will be presented before the houses during the Monsoon Session. Rijiju emphasized the need for cooperation to ensure the smooth functioning of both houses of Parliament.
Schedule for the Monsoon Session 2026
The all-party meeting is scheduled to take place on July 19 at 11 AM in the Main Committee Room of the Parliament House Annexe. Minister Kiren Rijiju specifically requested the presence of Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who has been nominated as the Chief Whip of the NCPI, while this meeting will occur just one day before the commencement of the Monsoon Session on July 20. During this session, the government is expected to brief political parties on its legislative plans, while opposition parties are likely to highlight specific issues they intend to raise for discussion.
Earlier, Kiren Rijiju had announced that the Monsoon Session would span from July 20 to August 13. In a post on the social media platform X, he stated that on the recommendation of the Government of India, Honorable President Droupadi Murmu has approved the summoning of both Houses of Parliament for the Monsoon Session 2026. The session is intended to facilitate meaningful debates, discussions, and decisions on matters of national importance throughout its duration until August 13, 2026.
Political Turmoil and Opposition Strategy
The political landscape has seen considerable upheaval recently, with splits occurring in several opposition parties. The Trinamool Congress has faced significant internal strife since 20 of its MPs merged with the National Citizens Party of India and sought a separate identity in the Lok Sabha. This shift followed the defeat of Mamata Banerjee in the assembly elections. On top of that, three TMC Rajya Sabha MPs have resigned from their positions to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the Shiv Sena (UBT) has also experienced a division, with six of its Lok Sabha MPs aligning themselves with the leadership of Eknath Shinde.
The shifts aren't limited to these parties alone; seven Rajya Sabha MPs from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have also joined the BJP. As the Monsoon Session approaches, the opposition is expected to raise several contentious issues, including the alleged NEET-UG paper leak, while Also, comments made by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh regarding casualties during Operation Sindoor have drawn criticism. The Congress party has already issued a notice of breach of privilege against the Defense Minister concerning these remarks, while meanwhile, the government remains focused on introducing and considering several essential bills during the session.
