Surya Dev Puja: Correct Method To Offer Water On Sunday For Prosperity

In the traditions of Sanatan Dharma, Sunday is a day exclusively dedicated to the worship of Surya Dev, the Sun God. Unlike many other deities, Surya Dev is considered a 'Pratyaksha Devta' or a visible deity who bestows his presence upon the world every single day. Chanting specific Surya Mantras and reciting the Aditya Hridaya Stotra on this day is believed to be exceptionally fruitful. However, the scriptures also lay down a very specific and precise method for worshipping Surya Dev and offering water to him. It's warned that certain mistakes, if committed even unintentionally during the puja, can lead to the destruction of the entire merit or fruit of the prayer. The Authentic Method of Offering Arghya

The process of offering water, known as Arghya, to Surya Dev requires specific materials and a particular posture. According to the prescribed method, one must always use a copper vessel or lota for this purpose, while to prepare the offering, fill the copper lota with clean water and add the following sacred items:

• Red Sandalwood (Lal Chandan)
• Red Flowers
• Kumkum
• A small amount of Akshat (unbroken rice grains)

Once the vessel is prepared, the devotee should stand and hold the lota with both hands, raising it above the level of their head. The water should be poured in a steady stream. One of the most important rules is to ensure that the stream of water being offered doesn't fall on your feet, while this is considered a sign of disrespect in Vedic traditions. Plus, the choice of the vessel is of utmost importance; one should never use containers made of steel, plastic, or glass to offer water to Surya Dev, as only copper is sanctioned for this ritual. Timing also plays a crucial role; water should never be offered during the afternoon hours. The most auspicious time for Arghya is immediately after sunrise. On top of that, the devotee must always perform the ritual after taking a bath and wearing clean, fresh clothes. Finally, the offering must always be made while facing the East direction, the direction of the rising sun.
