Uniform Civil Code: On Tuesday, the second day of the special session of the Uttarakhand Assembly, the state government will present a bill on Uniform Civil Code. Uttarakhand Cabinet has approved this bill. The drafting committee had submitted the draft of UCC to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on 2 February. Uttarakhand Assembly session has started from Monday. Now the draft will be placed in the House. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Monday, "Everyone was waiting for the Uniform Civil Code for a long time. Very soon everyone's wait is coming to an end. On Tuesday we will present it in the Assembly and it will be discussed further. My friends from other parties. are also requested to participate positively in this discussion."

2 lakh 33 thousand people gave their views

A five-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai had submitted the draft of four volumes and 740 pages on UCC to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday. After this, the Uttarakhand Cabinet approved the UCC proposal on Sunday. 2 lakh 33 thousand people had given their views regarding UCC. The views of about 10 percent of the families have been included in the draft.

What can be changed by the UCC bill?

  • Age of marriage – Girls will not be able to get married before 18 years of age.
  • Marriage Registration – It will be mandatory to get marriage registered
  • Equal rights on divorce – Husband and wife have equal rights for divorce.
  • Prohibition on polygamy – no second marriage while one spouse is alive
  • Live in relationship- It is necessary to give declaration of live in relationship.
  • Tribes- People from Scheduled Tribes will remain out of UCC.
BJP has majority in the house

BJP has majority in the House, hence the passing of the UCC bill is considered certain. BJP has 47 MLAs in the House. Besides, it also has the support of two independent MLAs. The UCC Drafting Committee has held 72 meetings. It is believed that traditional customs have not been tampered with in the draft and this entire draft will be women-centric. It is also expected that this will put a stop to polygamy.

Game changer decision of 2024 elections

This step of Dhami government can prove to be a game changer before the 2024 elections. Some organizations are against the bill. The government has made it clear that this bill will not harm anyone. Meanwhile, in view of the protests, Section 144 has been imposed around the Assembly. Barricading has been installed on the roads leading to the assembly.
