US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Mumbai on Tuesday. During the meeting, both leaders discussed trade deals, energy security, and defense cooperation. Rubio stated that the US and India are very close to finalizing a trade deal and expect good news soon.

In a significant development aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between India and the United States, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in India on a two-day official visit and held a high-level meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Mumbai on Tuesday. During this crucial interaction, both leaders engaged in detailed discussions covering a wide array of subjects, including energy security, solid defense cooperation, and the pressing need to further advance the multifaceted US-India strategic partnership. Following the meeting, the US Secretary of State openly addressed various geopolitical and economic issues before the media, ranging from the much-anticipated trade deal and Venezuelan oil prospects to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

While elaborating on the significance of his visit to India and the frequency of diplomatic engagements, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio strongly emphasized the vast scope and depth of ties between the two nations, while expressing his perspective, he noted at the outset that India's External Affairs Minister has visited the United States four times this year alone. Highlighting India's immense global and strategic weight, he pointed out that India isn't only the most populous nation in the world but also the largest democracy globally. On top of that, he described India as a vital commercial and business partner of the United States, noting that both nations cooperate extensively in the defense sector. He acknowledged India as a leading member of the Quad and a solid strategic partner. Expressing a desire for even more frequent interactions, he remarked that he feels they've not exchanged enough visits and that both sides should undertake more travel to further energize their mutual cooperation.

When journalists pressed him regarding the status of the long-pending trade deal during his interaction in Mumbai following his meeting with S Jaishankar, the US Secretary of State offered a highly positive and reassuring response. Discussing the trade agreement, Marco Rubio clarified that while the State Department doesn't directly negotiate trade pacts, they remain fully involved in the overarching process. He informed reporters that his counterpart, the National Security Advisor, and he himself are deeply invested and concerned about this matter and are actively working on it. Shedding light on the current progress, he stated that they're extremely close to the finish line and believes that only a few minor details remain to be finalized, while consequently, he expressed optimism that the agreement will materialize very soon. He affirmed that they're hoping, and rightfully so, to announce some good news shortly and proceed to sign the agreement subsequently, making them very optimistic about taking concrete steps in this regard in the near future.

Acknowledging India's pivotal global role in energy security and refining, Marco Rubio made a major statement following the Mumbai discussions. He noted that India is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to refining, possessing the immense capability to refine heavy crude oil. He highlighted that India has successfully done this in the past and expressed his belief that as more oil becomes available from Venezuela, India can play an instrumental role in meeting global energy demands. Expanding on this point, Marco Rubio stated that India already holds oil concessions in Venezuela through which they could potentially increase production independently. Terming these as positive developments, he clarified that he isn't claiming Venezuela alone can offset any global supply deficits caused by worldwide events, but asserted that over time it certainly can help, and at the very least, it can provide definite relief in the short term. He shared that they've previously discussed this matter with India and found the Indian side ready and willing to undertake such efforts. However, he also conceded that certain hurdles in the form of sanctions and regulations might exist, which both nations will need to navigate and resolve together.

During his interaction with the press in Mumbai, the US Secretary of State also touched upon the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. In his remarks, he laid out the US perspective on several aspects of the conflict and provided key clarifications. Rubio explicitly stated that Ukraine isn't being intentionally deprived of any essential military supplies or capabilities, while this clarification came in the wake of recent media reports and speculations claiming that the administration of US President Donald Trump had not approved the transfer of Patriot interceptor missiles to Ukraine from countries that had already acquired US-manufactured weaponry. Dismissing these allegations and reports, he added that the Trump administration feels deeply frustrated by accusations suggesting that they intend to cause harm to Ukraine. Overall, Marco Rubio's two-day visit to India and his substantive discussions with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar are set to serve as a major stepping stone in further cementing the strategic, economic, and defense alignment between India and the United States in the days ahead.
