West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari Announces 20 Percent DA Hike Before Durga Puja

In a significant development for thousands of government employees in West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced a major financial boost ahead of the festive season. Addressing a gathering at the West Bengal Police Headquarters, Bhabani Bhawan, the Chief Minister shared a series of updates regarding the Dearness Allowance (DA) and salary disbursements, while this announcement comes as a major relief for state officials who have been awaiting updates on their financial benefits. The Chief Minister emphasized that the state government is committed to the welfare of its workforce and is taking proactive steps to ensure that the festive season of Durga Puja is celebrated with financial security.

Early Salary and Additional DA for October

During the event at Bhabani Bhawan, the Chief Minister stated that instructions have already been issued to the Finance Secretary and the Finance Minister regarding the upcoming payments, while the Chief Minister has directed that the salary for the month of October should be released well before the commencement of Durga Puja. Usually, state government employees receive their salaries on the last working day of the month. However, if this new decision is implemented as planned, employees will receive their paychecks much earlier than usual, specifically before the mid-October festivities. In addition to the early salary, the Chief Minister has also ordered the release of an additional 20 percent Dearness Allowance for the month of the Puja. This 20 percent hike is intended to provide extra financial support to the employees during the high-expenditure festive period.

Bridging the Gap with Central Government Standards

One of the most critical points discussed by the Chief Minister was the disparity between the Dearness Allowance provided to central government employees and those of the West Bengal state government. The Chief Minister acknowledged that there is currently a 42 percent difference in the DA rates between the center and the state. While expressing a firm commitment to closing this gap, the Chief Minister noted that such a significant difference can't be eliminated overnight. The process of bringing state DA on par with central DA will take some time, but the administration is dedicated to achieving this goal. The Chief Minister assured the employees that they would eventually receive the same level of Dearness Allowance as their counterparts in the central government, though the transition will be gradual.

Implementation of the 7th Pay Commission

The Chief Minister also touched upon the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission. It was mentioned that the recommendations of the recently formed 7th Pay Commission would be implemented to further benefit the state employees. This move is seen as a long-term strategy to improve the financial standing of the government workforce, while the Chief Minister highlighted that the additional 20 percent DA announced for October is in line with the declarations made in the state government budget.
