Lohri 2024: Lohri is celebrated just a day before Makar Sankranti. The festival of Lohri is mainly celebrated in Punjab including Haryana and other states of India. The festival of Lohri is associated with the harvesting of old crops and sowing of new crops. This is a major festival of Sikh religion. On this day, this festival is celebrated with joy by offering peanuts, jaggery, rewari, sesame seeds etc. in the fire as Ravi's crop. This time the festival of Lohri will be celebrated on Sunday, 14 January 2024.

Customs related to the festival of Lohri

Worship of Lord Sun - On the day of Lohri, there is a tradition of worshiping Lord Sun, who gives light to the world. Sun God is considered the source of energy of life. Worshiping Sun God leads to good yield of crops and on this day people wish for happiness and prosperity in life.

Festival of family happiness- The festival of Lohri has a very special significance. It is also a major festival of Sikhism. On this day people visit each other's homes and celebrate the festival of Lohri with happiness. This festival increases love and affection among people. On this day, people get rid of all the sorrows and embrace each other happily and celebrate this festival with great pomp and show. This festival erases the distance between family members.

Prayer for crops- On the day of Lohri, people also pray for the prosperity of their crops. So that their crops remain good. On the day of Lohri, people light a bonfire and offer sesame seeds, rewari, peanuts and home-made sweet dishes. These dishes are considered symbols of crops.

What is done on lohri day

  • On the evening of Lohri, a pile of wood and cow dung cakes is made and burnt outside the house at the intersection or in an open field.
  • After burning Lohri, peanuts, sesame seeds, jaggery and other sweet dishes are added to it.
  • People dance happily and sing folk songs around the place where Lohri is lit. It is believed that doing this brings happiness in life.
  • On this day people embrace each other lovingly and share happiness with each other and congratulate each other on Lohri.
  • On the festival day of Lohri, people prepare Gajak, Revdi, sesame-jaggery laddu, corn roti and mustard greens as dishes.
  • On this day, sisters apply tilak to their brothers and bless them for their progress.
