Pakistan Elections: As the general elections are getting closer in Pakistan, the demand for postponing them is also increasing. On Sunday also, a proposal was presented in the Senate regarding postponement of the general elections. Two days ago also a similar proposal was brought in the Upper House of Parliament. A few days ago also, two members of the Senate had demanded postponement of the elections.

According to PTI report, all three resolutions presented in the Senate have demanded postponement of the general elections citing cold weather and security concerns. The third proposal was presented in Parliament by independent senator Hilal-ur-Rehman. In the proposal, Hilal-ur-Rehman has said that extreme cold and snowfall will create difficulties for citizens in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in casting their votes.

The proposal mentions the problems being faced in election campaign.

Difficulties in publicity due to cold have also been mentioned in the proposal. It has been said that questions being raised regarding security can create challenges for candidates trying to campaign. Especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, candidates are facing threats of terrorist attacks during election campaigning.

Security threats impacting participation

The independent candidate has claimed that due to security, the candidates are not able to campaign properly, hence their participation is being limited. In the proposal, the Election Commission of Pakistan has been requested to postpone the general elections. It has been said that if the elections are postponed then it will also help in removing the obstacles coming in the way of free and fair elections.

In the proposal presented two days ago, there was a demand to postpone the general elections by three months. This proposal was also presented by independent senator Hidayatullah. In his proposal, he too had demanded further postponement citing the terrorist incidents and security challenges that have taken place at present.

The Election Commission has rejected the first proposal

The first proposal presented earlier this month was rejected by the Election Commission and it was made clear that the general elections in the country will be held only on February 8. Along with the Election Commission, some major ruling parties had rejected the proposal passed in the Senate saying that postponing the electoral process would be unconstitutional.
