Tripura / Woman thrashed by husband and others on suspicion of extramarital affair, forced to marry 'lover'

A woman was brutally thrashed by her husband and others on suspicion of having an extramarital affair in Khowai district of Tripura. Not only this, after this she was forced to marry her alleged lover.

Police said on Monday that the incident took place on Saturday night at Krishnapur in the middle of Teliyamura police station area. The woman injured due to the assault has been admitted to the hospital. Teliyamura's sub-divisional police officer SDOP Sonacharan Jamatia said that the police have not received any written complaint yet. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

The victim woman told reporters that 15 people, including her husband, took her to the paddy field. They suspect that he is having an extramarital affair. The accused thrashed her badly, due to which she fainted. Her alleged boyfriend was also assaulted.

In this, after the woman regains consciousness, there are scenes of forced marriage ceremony by putting a garland around the neck of her alleged lover. The people present during this are seen expressing happiness. At the same time, some youths are seen forcing the alleged lover to fill vermilion in the demand of the woman.

The woman's husband has admitted in front of the media that he and his family members beat him up because he had a relationship with a young man from the village. After the incident, he himself took his wife to the hospital. Stayed there all night. She told without any remorse that the police had come to her house, but returned empty-handed.

Women's Commission condemned

On the other hand, Tripura Women's Commission (TCW) chairperson Brinali Goswami has condemned the incident. He said that such brutality with women cannot be tolerated in a civilized society. The incident will be investigated by sending a team to the village.
