Following the proposal presented by Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on April 16, specific bills are set to be introduced in the Lok Sabha for passage. These include the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill and the Delimitation Bill, 2026. According to the notification, exercising the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act, 2023, the Central Government appoints April 16, 2026, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force.

Provisions and Implementation Timeline

The Act mandates the reservation of one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. Under the original 2023 law, the reservation wasn't expected to be implemented before 2034, as it was linked to the completion of the delimitation process following the 2027 census. While the notification has now set the effective date as April 16, 2026, discussions regarding its implementation in 2029 are still ongoing in Parliament.
