Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha on Thursday regarding the Women's Reservation Bill. In a powerful speech, the Prime Minister stated that providing reservation to women is the need of the hour and those who oppose it will pay the price for a long time, while pM Modi mentioned that it was necessary to implement this 25-30 years ago when the idea first emerged. He noted that by now, it would have reached maturity with necessary improvements over time, which is the beauty of democracy, while the PM expressed his desire for the bill to be passed unanimously.
A Historic Moment to Give the Nation a New Direction
PM Modi stated that significant moments come in the life of a nation, where the mindset of society and the capability of leadership capture that moment to create a heritage for the country. He described this as such a moment in India's parliamentary history. He urged all MPs not to let this important opportunity pass, while the PM said that Indians together are going to give the country a new direction and make a meaningful effort to fill the governance system with sensitivity. He expressed confidence that the outcome of this churning would determine the direction and condition of the country's politics.
Warning of Electoral Defeat for Opponents
The Prime Minister asserted that making women a part of policy-making is the demand of the times, as women want to enter from Panchayats to Parliament. He claimed that some people are opposing the bill due to the fear of losing their seats. PM Modi warned that anyone opposing the bill today would pay a price for a long time and would lose elections. He highlighted that in the last 25-30 years, sisters who won at the grassroots level in Panchayat elections have developed political consciousness. While they were silent before, they're vocal today, and millions of women representatives are now mobilized.
Developed India and 50 Percent Population Participation
Regarding the Women's Reservation Law, PM Modi said that India is moving forward with confidence in the 21st century. He defined a developed India not just by excellent railways, infrastructure, or economic figures, but by the inclusion of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' in policy-making. He emphasized that it's the need of the hour for 50 percent of the population to be part of the nation's policy-making. PM Modi admitted that there has already been a delay, regardless of the reasons or who was responsible. He noted that while the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam was accepted in 2023, it wasn't possible in 2024 due to lack of time, but now there is time for 2029 and no further delay should occur.
Blank Check for Credit and Appeal for Consensus
PM Modi urged the opposition not to remain in delusion or arrogance and not to make technical excuses to stop the bill. He stated that he doesn't want credit for the women's reservation and is giving a 'blank check' of credit to the opposition. He even offered to issue advertisements and print photos of opposition leaders at government expense if the bill is passed. He specifically called upon the Samajwadi Party to help pass the bill. PM Modi mentioned that coming from an extremely backward society, it's his responsibility to take all sections along. He concluded by saying that the bill should be passed unanimously as those who carry half the country's responsibility deserve to be in Parliament.
