More than 19 lakh people have been left out and over 3.11 crore included in the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list in Assam which has been published at nrcassam.nic.in. The list ends the wait of millions of Assam residents who will now get to know whether they are actually an Indian or a ‘foreigner’. The website, however, has crashed under weight of the massive searches. “A total of 3,11,21,004 persons found eligible for inclusion in final NRC, leaving out 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims. Those not satisfied with outcome can file appeal before Foreigners Tribunals,” Prateek Hajela, State Coordinator of NRC, said. The hard copies of the Supplementary List of Inclusions are available for public viewing at the NRC Seva Kendras (NSK), offices of the deputy commissioner and offices of the Circle Officer during office hours, his office added.

Given the political sensitivity of the issue, there is tight security across Assam and a ban in place on assembly of more than four people in some public places considered sensitive. The publication of the final NRC list is likely to stir up a huge gamut of reactions involving the large number of stakeholders. Keeping in view the far-reaching implications of the move, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has called upon the people of the state to maintain peace and tranquility.
