New Delhi: Schools in northeast Delhi will remain closed all through next week after clashes between demonstrators for and against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) left at least 42 dead and hundreds injured, news agency PTI reported on Saturday quoting officials.

Exams scheduled for next week won't be held either with the situation "not conducive", officials said.

More than 500 people have been detained or arrested after the worst bout of violence in the capital in decades with the police being heavily criticised for failing to contain the clashes for four days starting Monday.

The clashes began over the citizenship law that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government introduced in December promising citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The CAA has stoked fears it could be used to target Muslims in combination with the proposed National Register of Citizens or NRC which intends to make Indians prove their citizenship with documents that many poor and illiterate do not possess.
