US News: US President Joe Biden has made a big announcement regarding Marijuana or Hemp. Biden has pardoned all Americans who were nationally convicted of possessing small amounts of marijuana. He said that it is not right to put someone in jail just for drinking or possessing ganja.

Officials estimate that about 6,500 people convicted of federal punishment for simple possession of marijuana will benefit. Let's just say no one is currently in federal prison for the offense of possession of marijuana. Most of the punishment is at the state level. However, Biden said, "The federal amnesty will make it easier for people to get jobs, housing and education."

Significantly, as a presidential candidate, Biden promised to decriminalize marijuana use as well as waive the sentence of the guilty.

'Sending to jail has taken many lives'

"Sending people to prison for having marijuana has taken many lives and people have been jailed for conduct that is no longer prohibited," Biden said on Thursday.

"Many lives have been lost and people jailed for conduct that many states no longer prohibit," the president said. He said that non-white people were statistically more likely to go to jail for marijuana.

Biden will also call on all state governors to pardon

The Democratic president said he would call on all state governors to issue a marijuana pardon. Biden also directed the Justice Department and the Department of Health to review how marijuana is classified under federal law. "We classify marijuana at the same level as heroin and more serious than fentanyl, it doesn't make any sense," he said.

Marijuana is already legal in 19 states and Washington DC. This medical use is legal in 37 states and three US territories.
