The Baloch people in Pakistan's Balochistan province celebrated their Independence Day today with great fervor and determination. In an attempt to stifle the voice of the people, the Pakistan Army deployed heavy forces throughout Balochistan. Restrictions were placed on holding rallies and public gatherings, and mobile internet services were completely shut down to prevent communication and coordination among the activists. Independence Day ceremonies were held early in the morning in several key cities, including Quetta, Noshki, Kalat, Gwadar, Turbat, and Khuzdar. Despite the heavy military presence, the Pakistani forces were unable to stop these widespread celebrations, while baloch leaders have taken a firm stand, announcing that from now on, no one in Balochistan will celebrate Pakistan's Independence Day on August 14, further distancing themselves from the Pakistani state.

Historical Context of Occupation

The history of Balochistan's struggle for independence dates back to 1947. At that time, the princely state of Kalat, located in the Balochistan region, had declared its independence. For the past 79 years, the people of Balochistan have consistently observed August 11 as their Independence Day. However, within a year of the 1947 declaration, the Pakistan Army moved in and occupied the Balochistan territory. Since that illegal occupation, Baloch human rights activists and nationalists have been engaged in a continuous struggle to reclaim their sovereignty. The current celebrations are a continuation of this long-standing resistance against what they term as an illegal administrative control by Pakistan.

Declaration of an Independent Nation

In a significant move, Baloch leader Mir Yar Baloch recently posted a document under the name of the Republic of Balochistan, claiming that 85 percent of the territory is now under their control. With this claim, he officially declared Balochistan an independent country. The declaration includes the establishment of a new administrative system, a new national flag, and a national anthem. On top of that, a new currency named the Balochi Phaloos has been announced for the independent state, while the document asserts that Baloch separatists have officially declared their independence from Pakistan, marking a pivotal moment in the region's history as they seek to establish a fully functional and recognized sovereign state.
