Donald Trump Says Flavio Bolsonaro Can Stay In US For As Long As He Wants

Following his defeat in the Brazilian presidential elections, Flavio Bolsonaro arrived in Miami. US President Donald Trump stated he can stay as long as he wants, while Marco Rubio denied US assistance.

Following his defeat in the presidential election in Brazil, Flavio Bolsonaro traveled to the United States, sparking a major political discussion and new diplomatic developments. US President Donald Trump made a significant statement regarding this development, declaring that Flavio Bolsonaro can remain in the United States for as long as he wishes to stay. This statement has generated considerable political attention at the international level. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that the Trump administration didn't provide any assistance to help Flavio travel from Brazil to the United States.

Flavio Bolsonaro arrived in the US city of Miami on Wednesday following his defeat in the election. Just a day prior to his arrival, the US State Department had announced that Flavio and his family would be granted a US visa. Flavio had contested the Brazilian presidential election held on October 25, where he was defeated by the incumbent president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Ever since this electoral defeat, speculations had been rife regarding his political future and his potential departure from his home country.

US and Brazilian Foreign Ministers Meet in Atlanta

Amidst these ongoing developments, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to reporters on Saturday in Atlanta during the meeting of G20 foreign ministers. He stated in clear terms that the US government wasn't involved in any plan to bring Flavio to the United States. He added that authorities only received information indicating that Flavio had already arrived in the country, while rubio clarified that Flavio already possessed a valid US visa and that President Trump permitted his entry into the United States.

Detailing his diplomatic engagements, Rubio shared that he also met with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on Friday and Saturday, while officials from both nations are likely to meet again during the upcoming meeting of foreign ministers scheduled in France in November. Also, both foreign ministers will hold additional talks in the coming weeks. These high-level meetings could take place ahead of the G20 leaders summit scheduled to be held in Miami in December, keeping diplomatic channels open between the two countries.

Arrived in America After Losing the Election

It's noteworthy that Flavio has refused to accept his official defeat in the presidential election in Brazil. He has levied allegations of electoral fraud without presenting any concrete evidence. His stance draws parallels to his father and former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who similarly refused to accept his defeat against Lula da Silva back in 2022. Currently, Jair Bolsonaro is serving a prison sentence of 27 years in connection with a coup attempt case.

During the election campaign, Flavio received indirect backing from US President Donald Trump. In Brazil, multiple serious investigations are underway against Flavio concerning allegations of corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion. Brazilian police had previously ordered him to surrender his passport, considering him a flight risk. Plus, the new Brazilian parliament will commence its official functioning starting February 1, following which Flavio will officially lose his senate seat.

Ongoing Talks Between the United States and Brazil

Speaking to media on Saturday at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, President Donald Trump clarified that he currently has no plans to meet with Flavio, while however, he reiterated that no time limit has been placed on Flavio's stay in the United States. Meanwhile, the recent discussions between Marco Rubio and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira have fostered hopes of improvement in bilateral relations, which have faced considerable tension over the past several months.

For months, diplomatic ties between the United States and South America's largest nation experienced friction. Now, both governments are exploring avenues to reduce this friction and establish formal communication channels. Flavio Bolsonaro's stay in the United States is poised to remain a critical factor in bilateral politics and diplomacy in the coming days, with international media closely monitoring the unfolding situation and its broader geopolitical implications.
