Coronavirus | The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) on Saturday approved the emergency use of a drug for the treatment of corona, amid a furore caused by the second wave of Corona virus in the country. This drug is named 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG). The drug is co-produced by the DRDO's Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) and the Hyderabad Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB).

Experts about the drug say that in the growing case of corona virus, it can prove to be a roughage. The drug has proved successful in clinical trials before DCGI approval. Patients who were tried on this drug recovered faster than the rest of the patients and their dependence on oxygen during treatment was also low.

DRDO started working on this medicine only after the first wave of corona virus appeared in the country. In April 2020, DRDO scientists conducted research on this drug in the lab. Research has shown that this drug can be helpful for patients with corona virus. After which DCGI approved the second phase of the drug trial in May 2020.

What came out during the trial?

A total of 11 hospitals in different parts were trialled after getting permission from DCGI for the second phase trial. The trial, which ran from May to October, included 110 patients. During the trial, it was revealed that the patients who were given this medicine recovered from the corona virus sooner than the rest of the patients. Patients involved in the trial recovered about 2.5 days earlier than normal patients.

Third phase trial

At the same time, the trial of the third phase was conducted from December 2020 to March 2021 in 27 hospitals across the country. This time trial had doubled the number of patients and included patients from several states including Delhi, UP, Gujarat, Rajasthan. During the third phase of trial, 42% of the patients who were given this medicine lost their oxygen dependence on the third day itself. Among those who did not give this medicine, 31 percent of the patients were reliant on oxygen. This means that the drug reduced the patient's dependence on oxygen.

How is this medicine taken?

This medicine is neither in tablet form nor in injection form. It comes in powder form. The powder is dissolved in water. When it reaches the body after taking the medicine, the corona gets deposited in the infected cells and stops the virus from growing. According to DRDor, this drug identifies corona infected cells and then starts its work. Regarding medicine, experts say that this drug can prove to be a rambunctious for Corona patients. Especially at a time when patients are needing more oxygen.

What is the basic principal of medicine?

DRDO scientist Dr AK Mishra, while talking to ABP News, said that glucose is very important for the growth of any virus. When the virus will not get glucose, then its chances of dying are greatly increased. Because of this, the lab created an analog of glucose by the scientists, which is called 2DRC glucose. This virus will try to eat glucose, but it will not be glucose. Because of this, he immediately dies there. This is the basic principal of medicine.
