Even on Tuesday, the air quality index of the capital Delhi and surrounding areas remained poor. According to SAFAR, the highest AQI of 303 was recorded in Delhi's Dhaula Kuan. This is even more dangerous because every year the number of people suffering untimely death due to air pollution is continuously increasing.

The air quality index of the country's capital Delhi is continuously worsening, although there has been a partial improvement in the figures of two days ago, but the current conditions are life-threatening. According to the standard of Air Quality Index given by WHO, AQI should be up to 100, but if it is crossing the figure of 300 in Delhi, then it is a sign of danger, it is believed that when these conditions are there before Diwali, In the coming days, the situation will worsen due to stubble and firecrackers.

Millions of people die every year due to air pollution

According to a WHO report, the haze and smoke present in the sky is a big threat to people's lives. Due to these, people are becoming victims of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, acute and chronic respiratory diseases, as a result of which air pollution is the cause of premature death of about 70 lakh people every year. Especially in India, it is at greatest risk, according to the report of Boston College's Global Observatory on Pollution, the number of deaths due to air pollution in India alone in 2019 was 16 lakh, if seen from the world perspective, then in the total deaths 18 percent of deaths occurred in India alone, in this case China was at second place. This research was also given a place in Lance's Planetary Health Journal.

The average age of people is decreasing

Research conducted on air pollution not only by Boston College but also by the University of Chicago revealed that due to air pollution the average age of people is decreasing by 10 years. Delhi's air pollution has been specifically mentioned in the report. Apart from this, according to the research released by Harvard in 2021, one third of the total untimely deaths in India are due to pollution alone.

Stubble will worsen the situation

The biggest cause of pollution in Delhi is considered to be the burning of stubble in the fields in Haryana and Punjab. At present, stubble does not contribute to the pollution, but it can become a big problem in the future, according to a CBI report. According to this year till October 23, only 714 incidents of stubble burning have been recorded in Punjab and 1794 in Haryana, whereas their number has been more in the past years, if we talk about last year then there were 49922 incidents of stubble burning in Punjab and 3661 in Haryana. Cases were registered, in 2021 this figure was 71304 in Punjab, 6987 in Haryana and in 2020 the maximum was 76590 in Punjab and 4202 in Haryana. In 2019, 55210 cases of stubble burning were registered in Punjab and 6334 in Haryana.

Biomass is the main cause of pollution in Delhi

According to the Environment Department of Delhi Government, biomass is responsible for the pollution taking place in Delhi before Diwali. On October 21, it contributed 21.5 percent of the pollution in Delhi. By October 24, this figure had increased to 32.7 percent. Apart from this, vehicular pollution and dust blowing from construction works are also major causes of pollution. According to the Meteorological Department, due to increase in cold, the amount of PM 2.5 in the atmosphere has increased, due to the slow wind speed, haze is spreading. It is feared that it will increase further in the coming days.

Delhi government made action plan

Delhi government has implemented GRAP Stage II to fight pollution, under this, public transport services are being increased in the city, instructions have been issued to reduce the interval between metro, where till now it is 7 to 8 minutes. There used to be a difference of 5 to 6 minutes, till now the difference has been reduced from 5 to 6 minutes to 2 to 3 minutes. Apart from this, private buses are also being hired. Environment Minister Gopal Rai had taken several important decisions in this direction in a meeting with senior officials on Monday. He had told that under the second phase of the Graded Response Action Plan, special teams have been deployed in the areas where AQI was high and chemicals are also being sprayed along with water to suppress pollution.
