Satya Pal Malik / Former J&K Governor Satyapal Malik passed away, breathed his last at Delhi's RML hospital

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik died on Tuesday at the age of 79. He breathed his last at Delhi's RML Hospital. Malik had been the governor of Bihar, Goa, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir. He was the last governor of J&K at the time of the abrogation of Article 370.

Satya Pal Mali: Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik died on Tuesday, 5 August 2025. 79-year-old Malik breathed his last at 1:10 pm at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in Delhi. He was ill for a long time and was undergoing treatment at the hospital. Malik had held important responsibilities as governor in states like Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya and Goa in his political career. Information about his death was shared from his official X handle, which wrote, "Former Governor Chaudhary Satyapal Singh Malik is no more."

The picture of his hospitalization gave information about the condition

In May this year, a picture was posted on Satyapal Malik's X handle, in which he was seen admitted in the hospital. His serious health condition could be gauged from the picture. Along with this post, he wrote, "I am getting calls from many of my well-wishers which I am unable to take. My condition is very bad right now. I am currently admitted in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital Delhi and am not in a condition to talk to anyone." This message had raised concern among his fans and supporters.

Political journey of Satyapal Malik

Satyapal Malik was born on 24 July 1946 in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh. He started his political career with student politics in 1965-66 and stepped into active politics inspired by the socialist ideology of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia. Malik showed his leadership ability as the President of Meerut College Students Union and later the Students Union of Meerut University (now Chaudhary Charan Singh University).

In the 1970s, Malik started his political career as an MLA. He worked with many political parties including Bharatiya Kranti Dal, Indian National Congress, Janata Dal, Lok Dal, Samajwadi Party and eventually Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1989 and was elected Lok Sabha MP from Aligarh in 1989.

Last Governor of Jammu and Kashmir

Satyapal Malik was appointed Governor of Bihar on 30 September 2017. After this, he was made the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2018. During his tenure, Article 370 was repealed on 5 August 2019, resulting in the end of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and the state was divided into two union territories. Malik was the last governor of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state. He was then appointed Governor of Meghalaya in 2020 and then Goa, where he served till October 2022.
