On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet decided to provide this facility to 79.88 crore poor under the National Food Security Act. How much wheat and rice will be allocated to the states under this scheme. A decision will be taken in this regard by the Department of Food and Public Distribution. Apart from this, a decision will be taken by the department itself to increase this scheme.

In order to deal with the corona, a decision can be taken to increase the scheme on conditions such as the implementation of lockdown, worsening of the monsoon. According to an estimate, a total of 80 lakh metric tonnes of ration can be distributed across the country by the central government in May and June. In the cabinet meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi, it was decided that no poor should face the scarcity of ration among the restrictions during the Corona period. After this announcement by the government, there are also speculations whether the coming two months could be with restrictions.

Earlier on Friday, the central government announced free ration to the poor in May and June under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. Sudhanshu Pandey, Secretary, Food and Public Distribution, had said, "We are going to give 5 kg free ration per month to the poor people in May and June under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana."
