The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued an official statement following the attack on two Indian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Following the firing incident on the ships, Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Fathali was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs, where a meeting was held with the Foreign Secretary. During this meeting, the Foreign Secretary expressed deep concern over the firing incident involving two Indian-flagged vessels and formally registered a protest with the Iranian Ambassador.

Emphasis on Safe Passage and Seafarer Security

Ambassador Mohammad Fathali was reminded of the high importance India attaches to the safety of merchant shipping and its seafarers. The Ministry of External Affairs noted that while Iran has previously provided safe passage to many India-bound vessels, the recent incident has raised significant concerns. In response, the Iranian Ambassador assured that these concerns would be communicated to the relevant authorities in Iran.

Iranian Navy Firing Near Oman

The incident occurred on Saturday when two merchant vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz came under fire. The firing was carried out by the Iranian Navy, targeting two Indian ships. Reports indicate that this attack on the Indian vessels took place near Oman. Consequently, the MEA summoned the Iranian Ambassador to deliver a message of protest against the attack on the Indian tankers. Following India's firm stance, there have been no reports of further attacks from the Iranian side.

Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime routes, through which a vast quantity of crude oil is transported globally. Countries like India, which import oil from the Gulf region, are heavily dependent on this route. Any tension in this area can directly impact India's energy security. India has made it clear that it seeks safe and unhindered movement for its vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. The Ministry of External Affairs expressed hope that Iran would soon normalize the situation and ensure a secure path for Indian ships. India continues to monitor the situation closely and is working on its future strategy.
