In Sanatan Dharma, behind every puja and fast there is some mythological story related to it. Similarly, a mythological story of Lord Ganesha is also associated with Durva Ashtami. According to the Puranas, once Lord Shri Ganesha was fighting with demons. In that war, demons were not dying and they would come back to life even after dying. Then to end that war, Shri Ganesha started swallowing him alive. After doing this, a lot of heat was generated in the body of Lord Shri Ganesha and his stomach and body started burning due to the heat. Then all the gods spread green Durva mat and offered Durva to him. Durva reduced his body temperature and Ganesh ji felt better. This is the reason why Durva is very dear to Shri Ganesh and without it the worship of Ganpati Bappa is considered incomplete.
