Mahindra's Big Move: XUV 7XO and XEV 9e Hybrid SUVs Set for Launch

Mahindra & Mahindra is set to enter the hybrid vehicle segment with the XUV 7XO and XEV 9e. Aiming to rival Toyota and Maruti, the company plans to launch these models by 2027-2028, featuring advanced hybrid and range-extender technologies.

Mahindra & Mahindra is strategically pivoting towards the hybrid vehicle segment in response to the surging demand for hybrid cars in India. Consumers are increasingly favoring hybrid technology as it offers superior fuel efficiency compared to conventional petrol and diesel vehicles while eliminating the range anxiety associated with pure electric vehicles. Mahindra is reportedly developing the XUV 7XO and XEV 9e SUVs, exploring both strong hybrid and range-extender electric vehicle (REEV) configurations to capture this growing market.

Current Market Dynamics and Toyota's Dominance

The Indian hybrid car market is currently dominated by Toyota, which has seen significant success with the Innova Hycross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and the Camry sedan. Maruti Suzuki and Honda Motor Company also maintain a strong presence in this segment. However, the landscape is set to become more competitive as major manufacturers like Hyundai, Kia, Renault, and Mahindra & Mahindra prepare to enter the hybrid space over the next few years.

Mahindra XUV 7XO Hybrid Development

Similar to the systems found in the Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder, Mahindra's upcoming hybrid SUV is expected to feature a sophisticated powertrain combining a petrol engine with an electric motor, while the automaker plans to integrate this strong hybrid system across several of its existing ICE-powered SUV models, with the XUV 7XO being among the first to receive the upgrade. Codenamed W613, the XUV 7XO hybrid is currently undergoing testing and is slated for a 2027 market release.

Mahindra XEV 9e Range-Extender Hybrid

Mahindra is also working on a range-extender setup specifically for its electric SUVs built on the new-age INGLO platform. The Mahindra XEV 9e is anticipated to be the first electric vehicle from the brand to feature this range-extending technology. This setup aims to provide the benefits of electric driving while using an internal combustion engine to charge the battery on the go. Codenamed W623, this model is expected to be launched in 2028.
