The political landscape of West Bengal has undergone a dramatic shift following the formation of the new government. For Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the transition has been marked by a series of setbacks that have put the party on the defensive. Since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took charge of the state on May 4, the TMC has been grappling with a wave of resignations, legal actions, and a widespread crackdown on illegal constructions. Mamata Banerjee, who not only saw her party lose the assembly elections but also lost her own seat, now finds herself surrounded by challenges from multiple fronts as the new administration intensifies its scrutiny of the previous regime's activities.
Bulldozer Action Against Illegal Structures
The new administration has initiated a rigorous campaign against unauthorized constructions across the state. This bulldozer action has specifically targeted buildings allegedly linked to TMC leaders and local strongmen. In the Konnagar area of Hooghly district, a TMC office was demolished on Monday, while authorities stated that the office was built illegally on government land. This particular structure was reportedly constructed under the direction of local TMC councilor Khokon Pal. The demolition serves as a clear signal from the new government regarding its stance on land encroachments and illegal political offices.
The crackdown isn't limited to Hooghly. In Kolkata, the municipal corporation has been active in issuing notices and deploying machinery. On Sunday, May 24, bulldozers were seen in several prominent areas including Beleghata, Bospukur, Tiljala, and Kasba. The primary objective of these operations was to dismantle illegal multi-story buildings that were purportedly connected to former or current TMC leaders, while one notable case involves a building owned by Kasba MLA Javed Khan. A show cause notice was issued regarding alleged illegal construction in his property. He was directed to produce valid legal documents for the structure, with a warning that demolition would commence on Monday if the requirements weren't met. While Javed Khan has maintained that there are no legal issues with the construction, the government's pressure remains steadfast.
Government Stance and High-Profile Scrutiny
Minister Agnimitra Paul, while visiting one of the demolition sites in Kolkata, emphasized the government's resolve. She stated that action would be taken against everyone responsible for overseeing illegal constructions, those who built them, and those who invested money in such projects. This proactive approach has extended to other districts as well, with similar actions reported in Purulia and Khanakul. The government's focus is on identifying and removing structures that were erected without proper authorization during the 15 years of TMC rule.
In addition to physical structures, the scrutiny has reached the highest levels of the TMC leadership. Two days ago, on Monday, a police team visited the residence of TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, while the purpose of the visit was to collect security equipment, which Kolkata Police officials described as a routine procedure. However, the timing of such visits, coupled with the ongoing arrests of local leaders over the past 3 weeks, has added to the sense of unease within the party. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has also sent multiple notices to properties associated with Abhishek Banerjee, seeking explanations for constructions that allegedly deviate from the originally sanctioned plans.
Wave of Resignations and Internal Turmoil
The TMC is also facing an internal crisis as many of its members are choosing to distance themselves from the party. Despite losing state power, the TMC still holds control over several municipalities and panchayats. However, this control is rapidly eroding. In Bhatpara Municipality, the Chairman and at least 30 councilors submitted their resignations on Monday. Similar reports have emerged from Diamond Harbour Municipality, where 8 out of 16 councilors have resigned. The trend of mass resignations has also been observed in Halisahar, Kanthi, North Barrackpore, and Garulia, where more than half of the councilors in certain areas have stepped down simultaneously.
A significant blow to the party came from senior MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who resigned from her post as the Barasat Organizational District President. While she took moral responsibility for the party's heavy defeat in the region, she didn't hold back in her criticism, while she openly criticized the TMC's internal functioning and the role played by I-PAC in the shameful election loss. This public display of dissent from a senior leader highlights the growing fractures within the party's top brass.
Arrests and Legal Challenges
The legal pressure on TMC members has intensified with a series of arrests across different districts. In the Suri area of Birbhum, Bappaditya Das, the husband of a local TMC councilor, was arrested on Monday, while in Bardhaman, another TMC leader named Abhishek Da was apprehended on charges of extortion and intimidation. Reports indicate that at least a dozen councilors from various districts have been arrested, and many others have been subjected to lengthy police interrogations. These actions have Notably weakened the party's local organizational strength.
Mamata Banerjee has been vocal in her criticism of the Suvendu government's actions. On May 24, she condemned the bulldozer actions, the arrests of party workers, and what she described as the post-election harassment of individuals. Despite her strong words, a notable silence has been observed among many other top leaders of the party regarding these issues. As the new government continues its 3 week long streak of actions against illegalities and alleged corruption, the TMC finds itself in a precarious position, struggling to keep its flock together while facing administrative and legal heat.
