Rahul Gandhi Leads INDIA Alliance March to Gandhi Smriti Over NEET Paper Leak

In a significant political development amidst the ongoing turmoil over the NEET paper leak, the leaders of the INDIA alliance have transitioned from internal strategy meetings to active street presence. Following a crucial meeting held at the residence of Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, a convoy of opposition leaders moved towards Gandhi Smriti Bhawan. This move comes at a time when Delhi is witnessing intense and sometimes violent protests by students demanding accountability for the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination process.

High Level Meeting at Rahul Gandhi Residence

The day began with a high-stakes gathering of the INDIA alliance partners at Rahul Gandhi's house. The meeting was attended by several prominent figures of the opposition bloc, including the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, Sonia Gandhi. The primary agenda of this meeting was to discuss the escalating situation regarding the NEET paper leak and the subsequent crackdown on protesting students. Other notable attendees included RJD MP Manoj Jha and Congress MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who arrived early to participate in the strategy session, while the atmosphere at the residence was one of urgency, reflecting the growing unrest among the youth across various states.

The Journey to Gandhi Smriti

Immediately after the conclusion of the meeting, the leaders decided to take their protest to the streets in a symbolic gesture of 'Gandhigiri'. The entire group of leaders boarded a bus to travel to Gandhi Smriti Bhawan, located on 30 January Marg. This destination is approximately 2 kilometers away from Rahul Gandhi's residence. The choice of a bus for transport was seen as a collective show of unity among the alliance partners. Before the convoy departed, Rahul Gandhi took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to inform the public about their peaceful march. He stated that the MPs and leaders of the INDIA alliance were heading to Gandhi Smriti to stand in solidarity with the student community.

Rahul Gandhi Message of Solidarity

In his social media post, Rahul Gandhi expressed deep empathy for the students affected by the paper leak crisis. He wrote that they were going to remember the students who were lost—those children who were forced to take their own lives following the NEET paper leak. He further emphasized that the opposition stands firmly with the students who have been injured or beaten while making peaceful demands for justice and accountability. His message was clear: the students of India aren't alone, and the entire opposition is standing behind them and their demands. This statement aimed to provide a sense of support to the thousands of aspirants who feel their future is at stake.

Obstacles and the Shift in Plans

The opposition's original plan was to march towards India Gate to register their protest. However, Rahul Gandhi later revealed that they were prevented from doing so, while he mentioned that since the students are on the streets, all opposition MPs felt they should also be on the streets. While they intended to go to India Gate, the authorities refused permission and stopped them, while consequently, the leaders decided to proceed to 30 January Marg (Gandhi Smriti).

Voices from the Opposition

Several leaders shared their perspectives during the march. Congress leader Gurdeep Singh Sappal remarked that the country belongs to Gandhi and his principles, and it's on those very principles that the students are peacefully protesting. He criticized the current administration, stating that the country doesn't belong to an anti-national nationalist government but to the ideals of Gandhi. CPI(M) MP John Brittas also voiced his concerns, stating that the march was a message that the country needs democracy rather than strictness or martial law. He expressed worry over the heavy police deployment in the capital and the perceived attempts to protect Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan while allegedly suppressing protesters.

Concerns Over Youth Restlessness

RJD MP Manoj Jha highlighted the growing anxiety among the youth, pointing to the protests at Jantar Mantar and in various states. He stated that the current situation in the country is deeply concerning and that the restlessness among the young generation would soon lead to further actions. Similarly, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, speaking before the meeting, mentioned that the opposition is prepared to fight and win, despite the alertness of the Delhi Police and the home ministry's officials. The collective stance of the INDIA alliance leaders underscores their commitment to making the NEET paper leak a central issue of their political narrative.
