The State Bank of India (SBI), the country's largest public sector lender, has officially released the recruitment notification for the year 2026 to hire Junior Associates, commonly known as Clerks. This recruitment drive is being conducted under a Special Recruitment Drive, aiming to fill a total of 1538 vacancies across various regions. Application Timeline and State-Specific Rules

The online application process for the SBI Clerk Recruitment 2026 commenced on August 7, 2026. Interested and eligible candidates have a window of twenty days to complete their registration, as the last date for submitting applications is August 27, 2026. It's crucial for applicants to note that they can apply for vacancies in only one State or Union Territory. SBI has made it mandatory for candidates to have proficiency in the local language of the state they're applying from, which includes the ability to read, write, speak, and understand the language effectively. This ensures that the selected candidates can serve the local clientele efficiently.

Three-Phase Selection Process

The selection of candidates for the post of Junior Associate will be based on a rigorous three-phase process. The first stage is the Preliminary Examination, which serves as a screening test. Candidates who successfully clear the Prelims will be eligible to appear for the second stage, which is the Main Examination, while the final stage of the selection process is the Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT). According to the tentative schedule provided by the bank, the Preliminary Examination is expected to be held in September 2026, while the Main Examination is likely to take place in October or November 2026. The final merit list will be prepared based on the performance in these stages.

Preliminary Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

The Preliminary Examination will be an objective type test consisting of 100 marks. Candidates will be given a total duration of one hour to complete the paper. The exam will be divided into three sections, and all questions will be multiple-choice, while a significant aspect of the SBI Clerk Prelims is the negative marking system, where one-fourth of the marks assigned to a question will be deducted for every wrong answer. Interestingly, SBI has not set any section-wise or overall qualifying cutoff marks for the Preliminary stage, meaning candidates just need to score high enough to be in the merit list for the Mains.

Mains Examination and Language Proficiency

For the Main Examination, candidates will be required to achieve a minimum percentage of marks as decided by the bank. However, similar to the Prelims, there will be no specific minimum qualifying marks required for individual sections. Following the Mains, the Local Language Proficiency Test will be conducted. Candidates who can produce evidence of having studied the specified local language in their 10th or 12th standard marksheets or certificates will be exempted from this test. For others, the test will evaluate their proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the local language of the applied state.

Age Limit and Communication Guidelines

As per the official notification, the age of the candidates should be between 20 and 28 years as of April 1, 2026. This means candidates must have been born not earlier than April 2, 1998, and not later than April 1, 2006 (both days inclusive). Relaxation in the upper age limit will be provided to candidates belonging to reserved categories such as SC, ST, OBC, and PwBD as per the prevailing government rules. Also, SBI has advised all applicants to maintain an active mobile number and email ID throughout the recruitment process, as all important updates, including admit cards and result announcements, will be communicated through these channels.
