15 Indian crew members are on board the Liberian-flagged ship MV Leela Norfolk, which was hijacked off the coast of Somalia. Information about the hijacking of this ship was received on Thursday evening. At present, Indian Navy aircraft are keeping an eye on the ship and communication has been established with the crew. After receiving information about the incident, the Navy launched an MPA. INS Chennai, deployed for maritime security operations, was diverted to assist the foreign ship. The plane flew over the ship on the morning of 5 January 2024. Along with this, contact was established with the ship while ensuring the safety of the crew. The Indian Navy said that INS Chennai is arriving to assist the ship.

Specialty of INS Chennai

INS Chennai is an indigenously designed and built guided missile destroyer of the Indian Navy. It is the third and last ship of the Kolkata-class stealth-guided missile destroyer Project 15A. It was built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. INS Chennai was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 21 November 2016. Its length is 163 meters and its beam is 17.4 meters. It is a ship powered by four reversible gas turbine engines that can carry 350 to 400 people.
