A situation of communal tension emerged in the Azad Chowk area of Ward No. 5, Sihora tehsil, Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday night. According to administrative officials, the incident occurred around 9:30 PM when an Aarti was being performed at a local Durga temple while Namaz was being offered at a nearby mosque. A minor dispute escalated into a violent confrontation involving stone-pelting and alleged vandalism. Senior officials from the district administration and police department rushed to the spot with a large contingent of security personnel.
The Azad Chowk area in Sihora is historically categorized as a sensitive zone. Local reports indicate that the friction began during the simultaneous conduct of religious ceremonies. Witnesses stated that the verbal spat quickly turned physical, leading to an assault on a youth and damage to the temple's outer grill. This triggered stone-pelting from both sides, causing panic in the market area and leading to the immediate closure of local businesses. The police were alerted immediately to prevent the situation from spiraling further.
Sequence of Events and Immediate Police Intervention
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Sihora police station personnel acted swiftly to contain the crowd. As the tension mounted, additional reinforcements were summoned from neighboring police stations. Specialized units and riot control vehicles were dispatched from the Jabalpur district headquarters to Sihora. Law enforcement agencies cordoned off the affected area and dispersed the gathered crowds. According to officials, the rapid intervention was crucial in preventing the localized dispute from spreading to other parts of the town.
Administrative Response and On-Site Inspection
Upon receiving news of the unrest, Jabalpur Collector Raghavendra Singh and Superintendent of Police (SP) Sampat Upadhyay reached Sihora late Thursday night. The officials conducted a foot patrol through the affected streets to assess the damage and reassure the public. SP Sampat Upadhyay clarified that no religious structure sustained significant damage. He noted that while there were reports of minor damage to a temple grill, the primary structures remained intact, while the administration held discussions with community elders to restore normalcy and ensure communal harmony.
Security Measures and Current Ground Situation
At present, security has been intensified across Azad Chowk and adjacent sensitive localities in Sihora. Multiple police teams are conducting continuous patrolling, and static pickets have been established at key intersections. Surveillance has been enhanced using drone cameras to monitor any suspicious movements. The police have maintained a high state of alert to deter any potential miscreants from disrupting the peace.
Investigation and Prevention of Rumors
The police have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the dispute. Authorities are currently scanning CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify the individuals involved in stone-pelting and vandalism. The administration has also issued a stern warning against the dissemination of misinformation and rumors on social media platforms.
