Vice President Election: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the name of CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate for the post of Vice President. Giving this information, BJP National President JP Nadda said that this decision was taken unanimously in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Parliamentary Board meeting.Who is CP Radhakrishnan?CP Radhakrishnan is a native of Tamil Nadu and has been an old and dedicated leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Jansangh and BJP. He is currently serving as the Governor of Maharashtra. Earlier he has also been the Governor of Jharkhand and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry with additional charge of Telangana.Radhakrishnan started his political career at the age of 16 with RSS and Jansangh. He has also served as a Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) and has been a member of the National Executive of BJP. He has played an important role in strengthening the BJP in South India, especially Tamil Nadu and Kerala.Social and political background of CP RadhakrishnanCP Radhakrishnan comes from the OBC community and belongs to the Kongu Vellalar sub-caste of the Gounder caste. This sub-caste is mainly influential in the Kongu region of western Tamil Nadu and is associated with agriculture. This community has a wide influence in this area. Tamil Nadu BJP state president Annamalai and AIADMK leader E. Palaniswami also belong to this caste.BJP's game planThis move of the BJP is considered strategically important in view of the assembly elections to be held in Tamil Nadu next year. When the BJP removed Annamalai from the post of state president under pressure from an alliance with the AIADMK, there was talk that the votes of the Kongu Vellalar community could go away from the BJP. In such a situation, making CP Radhakrishnan the Vice Presidential candidate is being considered a damage control move by the BJP. This move may be part of the strategy to reconnect the voters of the Kongu region in Tamil Nadu.Opposition will also be talked to: JP NaddaJP Nadda said, "We will also contact the opposition to ensure unopposed election for the post of Vice President. We have been in touch with opposition leaders earlier and will continue to do so. All our NDA allies have supported the name of CP Radhakrishnan."Dates for Vice Presidential electionAccording to the Election Commission, voting for the Vice Presidential election will be held on 9 September 2025 and counting of votes will also take place on the same day. The last date for filing nominations is 21 August 2025, while candidates can withdraw their nominations till 25 August 2025.It is noteworthy that on 21 July 2025, on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President citing health reasons. His resignation letter read, "In order to give priority to healthcare and follow medical advice, I resign from the post of Vice President of India with immediate effect, in accordance with Article 67 (A) of the Constitution."
