President Ram Nath Kovind said in a speech to the nation on the eve of the 75th anniversary of Independence on Friday that the Parliament is the temple of democracy and the highest forum for discussion, debate, and determination of people’s well-being.

President Kovind’s statement is significant because it took place a few days after the monsoon parliamentary meeting ended with painful notes. The opposition accused the Narendra Modi government of “murdering democracy”.

When talking about the roots of democracy, he said: “When India won its independence 75 years ago, many skeptics believed that democracy would not survive in India. They hardly knew that in ancient times, even in modern times, India was growing up to all grown-ups. People are ahead of many Western countries in providing franchise rights, regardless of any difference.

"We have adopted a parliamentary democracy. Therefore, our parliament is the temple of our democracy, it provides us with the highest forum where we can discuss, debate and decide on questions posed for the well-being of our people.

The president said that our parliament will soon be installed in a new building, which makes all indigenous people proud.
