Three diesel tankers depart from Russia to US, first supply since 2023

Three tankers carrying 40000 tons of diesel have departed from Russia for the US, marking the first such supply since 2023, seen as an effort to lower fuel prices.

In a major development regarding international energy and fuel supplies, three tankers carrying 40000 tons of diesel have departed from Russia heading towards the United States. This marks the very first diesel supply from Russia to the US since the year 2023. This significant agreement is widely considered to be a strategic move behind the discussions between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to reduce soaring fuel prices. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak provided this information, stating that all three tankers are currently sailing towards the eastern coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

A Major Step Following Trump Putin Talks

This crucial agreement took place approximately two weeks after a phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Analysts believe that President Trump intends to mitigate the rising fuel prices within the United States. Also, midterm elections are also scheduled to be held in the US, making the control of domestic fuel costs a top priority for the administration. Russia's Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has reportedly assisted in facilitating this critical energy supply, paving the way for renewed trade channels between the two nations.

Maritime Tracking and Destination of Tankers

Kpler, a prominent firm tracking maritime vessel movements, reported that one of the tankers signaled its journey toward New York on Friday. The vessel was estimated to arrive at its destination by November 7. According to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, the three tankers are making their way to the eastern coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian presidential palace Kremlin, also confirmed the departure of this initial consignment. He stated that the first tanker has already set sail and that regular supplies will continue to be maintained moving forward.

Total Volume of Diesel and US Consumption

According to Novak, the initial projections indicated that a total of 500000 metric tons of diesel could potentially be supplied to the United States in October. President Trump had previously stated that Russia would immediately provide more than 300000 tons of diesel. This was intended to be followed by 500000 tons in November and subsequently 1 million tons in the following period. The 40000 tons of diesel currently being transported across the three tankers is equivalent to approximately 300000 barrels. Given that the United States consumes roughly 4 million barrels of diesel daily, this single consignment accounts for nearly 7 percent of its daily domestic consumption.

Sharp Criticism from Ukraine and Western Leaders

This new energy arrangement has faced severe criticism within Ukraine, while ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the decision, describing it as a weak move by strong allies. Leaders from both the Republican and Democratic parties in the United States also criticized the agreement. Accusations were leveled against President Trump for allegedly violating American legislation. Just last month, Trump had signed a law empowering the administration to impose up to 100 percent secondary tariffs on the top five nations purchasing energy from Russia, though this enforcement action was subsequently put on hold.

Sanctions Postponed Amid Growing Diplomatic Tensions

A few days following the agreement, President Trump chose to withhold punitive actions under the Lindsey O Graham law, which governs potential sanctions against Russia and Iran, while this specific legislation could have triggered tariffs of up to 100 percent on five major countries importing oil and gas from Russia, potentially impacting India and four other nations. Trump cited national interests as the reason for temporarily postponing these sanctions, although the legal authority to implement them remains intact. Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions have intensified between President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, with Trump alleging that Zelenskyy is unwilling to bring an end to the ongoing war with Russia.
