Tikaram Jully Slams Government Over Rising Sugar Prices Ahead Of Festivals

In the wake of the upcoming festival season, the surge in sugar prices has ignited a political firestorm in Rajasthan. Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully has come down heavily on the state government, pointing out that sugar is a fundamental necessity for every household, yet there appears to be a complete lack of effective control or monitoring by the administration. Speaking to the media on Sunday, Jully questioned the formulation of policies that directly strain the finances of the common man, highlighting a perceived disconnect between government actions and public welfare. He expressed concern that the lack of oversight is allowing prices to spiral out of control at a time when families are preparing for major celebrations.

Sugar as a Universal Necessity

Tikaram Jully emphasized that sugar is a commodity used by every family, regardless of their economic status. Whether a family is wealthy or poor, sugar remains an essential part of their daily lives, while he noted that for the average person, the day begins with a cup of tea, for which sugar is an indispensable ingredient. Beyond this, sugar is used in various small and large daily household tasks, while with the festival season approaching, Jully warned that the hike in sugar prices could severely disrupt the budgets of ordinary families. He specifically pointed out that the impact would be felt more acutely by rural households, where sugar consumption tends to be higher compared to urban areas due to traditional practices and the preparation of sweets during festivities.

The Burden of Rising Inflation

The Leader of Opposition further argued that the crisis of inflation isn't limited to just one commodity, while he observed a pattern where the prices of various essential goods fluctuate unpredictably, causing widespread distress. At times, the price of pulses skyrockets, followed by edible oils becoming expensive, or the cost of flour increasing. Now, the rising price of sugar has added to the woes of the public, while jully demanded that the government clarify its planning regarding the prices of essential commodities. He alleged that while the common man consistently bears the burden of rising costs, there are frequent accusations that government policies are designed to benefit influential individuals or large entities rather than the general populace.

Policy Critique: Ethanol and Trade

A significant part of Jully's criticism focused on the government's industrial and trade policies concerning sugarcane. He mentioned that the diversion of sugarcane for ethanol production is impacting the overall production and availability of sugar in the market. He pointed out a contradictory situation where sugar exports are being reduced on one hand, while on the other hand, the government finds it necessary to import sugar when domestic prices spike. Jully urged for a deeper understanding of these policies, questioning why such a situation has been allowed to develop where domestic supply is compromised. He suggested that the current approach lacks foresight and fails to balance industrial needs with the basic food security of the citizens.

Demand for Strict Monitoring and Action

Concluding his remarks, Tikaram Jully stated that the brunt of inflation is most severely felt by the middle class, the poor, and rural families. Even minor increases in the prices of small items can throw a monthly household budget into disarray. He called upon the government to implement regular and effective monitoring of the prices of all essential food items, including sugar. As demand is expected to rise during the festival season, he insisted that the government must maintain a strict vigil against hoarding and black marketing. He emphasized that without such measures, the common consumer would be left at the mercy of market manipulators, leading to unnecessary financial pressure during what should be a time of joy.
