Former US President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on Colombian President Gustavo Petro, labeling him an "illegal drug trafficker" and announcing a halt to US aid for Colombia. Speaking from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump took to social media to state that Petro is a "failed and unpopular leader" who is completely incapable of stopping drug cultivation and trafficking. He further claimed that Petro engages in "poisonous rhetoric" against the US, urging him to "immediately shut down these fields of death," or America would do it itself, and "it won’t be nice. On Truth Social, Trump wrote, "Colombian President Gustavo Petro is an illegal drug trafficker who is promoting vast amounts of drug cultivation in small and large farms all over the country. This has now become Colombia’s largest business. Petro is doing nothing to stop it, even though he's receiving large amounts of financial aid and subsidies from the United States. This is a tremendous betrayal of the USA. " This comes as a UN report indicates Colombia remains the. World's largest cocaine exporter, with coca cultivation reaching record levels last year.

Petro's US Visa Revoked

This isn't the first time tensions have flared between Trump and Petro. Recently, the US State Department revoked Gustavo Petro's visa while he was in New York to attend the UN General Assembly, while during that time, Petro participated in a protest and urged US soldiers not to obey Trump's orders and to "not point guns at humanity.

Trump's Related Claims

Trump also posted on social media about a separate incident, claiming the US military destroyed a drug-smuggling submarine heading towards the US coast in the Caribbean, saving 25,000 American lives. Two terrorists were reportedly killed, and two were captured alive, while the apprehended individuals were from Ecuador and Colombia. President Petro confirmed the safe return of one of his citizens, stating on X,. "We're pleased that he's alive and will be prosecuted according to the law.
