Udhayanidhi Stalin Arrested Over Controversial Remarks Against Actress Trisha Krishnan

In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, the Leader of the Opposition and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Udhayanidhi Stalin has been arrested by the police. The arrest follows a major controversy surrounding his alleged derogatory and double-meaning remarks directed at popular film actress Trisha Krishnan. The action was initiated after the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, filed formal complaints with both the police and the National Commission for Women (NCW) against the DMK leader's comments.

The Incident at Thanjavur Rally

The controversy erupted during a public meeting organized by the DMK in Thanjavur, which was focused on the ongoing Cauvery water dispute. According to media reports, while Udhayanidhi Stalin was addressing the gathering, a section of the crowd began chanting the name of actress Trisha Krishnan. The chants of "Trisha, Trisha" interrupted the leader's speech, prompting a response from him that has now landed him in legal trouble.

In response to the chanting crowd, Udhayanidhi Stalin paused his speech and made a remark that was perceived as having a double meaning. " Although he immediately attempted to clarify his statement by suggesting that he was referring to the Cauvery river in the context of the water dispute, the remark was seen as inappropriate and offensive by many.

Legal Action and Complaints

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) took strong exception to the remarks. S. Bhairavi, the coordinator of the TVK Central District Women's Wing, filed a formal complaint against the former Deputy Chief Minister at the Thanjavur East Police Station. The TVK alleged that Udhayanidhi Stalin responded to the crowd's chants with an obscene and double-meaning comment that insulted the dignity of the actress.

Following the complaint, the Tamil Nadu police took swift action. A heavy police force was deployed in front of the residence in Thanjavur where the DMK leader was staying. Initially taken into custody for questioning, Udhayanidhi Stalin was subsequently placed under formal arrest. The TVK has also approached the National Commission for Women (NCW) to seek further intervention in the matter, highlighting the gravity of the allegations regarding the treatment of women in public discourse.
