Shehbaz Sharif / Why did Pak PM Shahbaz get tensed as soon as Muharram started?

As soon as Muharram started, challenges for Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif increased. Along with passing the budget, he had to handle the law and order situation in the country. Terrorist incidents, martyrdom of a Major and security directives made the atmosphere tense. In his talks with America, he stressed on regional stability and trade cooperation.

Shehbaz Sharif: As soon as the holy month of Muharram of the Islamic calendar began, there was a stir in Pakistan's politics and security system. On the one hand, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif was busy passing the important federal budget for 2025-26, while on the other hand, maintaining law and order regarding Muharram processions across the country became his priority.

Budget passed, but challenge remains

Shahbaz Sharif presented the budget for 2025-26 while praising his economic team and also got the approval of the cabinet. Although this success was achieved in Parliament, maintaining peace on the streets emerged as a big challenge for him. The increasing religious sensitivity and terrorist threat during Muharram has put the government on alert.

High alert for security

The Prime Minister has given strict instructions to the Minister of Internal Affairs and all provincial governments to deal strictly with any kind of violence or incidents of communal tension during Muharram. Security agencies have been put on alert in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. Special emphasis has been laid on coordination between the agencies of the Centre and the states so that there is no lapse during religious processions.

Terrorist incidents become a cause of concern

The martyrdom of Major Mujeez Abbas Shah during an operation in South Waziristan recently has further increased the concern of the government. Regarding this incident, tribute was paid to him in the cabinet and the resolve to take strict action against terrorist activities was reiterated. Also, a special committee has been formed on the issue of gas production and supply, which will soon submit its report to the Supreme Court.

Diplomatic talks with America

Amid security and internal matters, Prime Minister Sharif also had important talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In this discussion, consensus was reached on various aspects of regional stability, trade partnership and diplomatic cooperation. Sharif praised the role of America in the Iran-Israel conflict and reiterated the demand for active US intervention in reducing India-Pakistan tension.
