Wrestlers Protest: The protesting wrestlers on Friday demanded the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to set up an inquiry committee to investigate allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. A day before this, the wrestlers had threatened to register several FIRs against this sports administrator.

Wrestlers made these allegations

In a letter to IOA president PT Usha, the wrestlers claimed that the coach and sports science staff at the national camp were 'absolutely incompetent' besides alleging financial irregularities on the part of the WFI (in the fund). Keeping four demands, the wrestlers wrote, 'A committee should be appointed immediately to investigate the complaints of sexual exploitation.' The wrestlers also reiterated their demand for dissolution of the WFI and sacking of the president. After consulting with the wrestlers, a new committee should be formed to run the national federation.

A committee will be formed to investigate.

Earlier on Thursday late night, the wrestlers had a four-hour conversation with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. The government has said that if the players agree, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh can disassociate himself from the wrestling association till the investigation report comes. The coaches who are facing allegations can also be separated from the wrestling association till the completion of the investigation. The government told the players that a three-member committee can be formed to investigate the allegations of sexual harassment and only the players can give the names of its three members. According to sources, the players could not tell anything concrete on the allegations of sexual harassment.

Will the players talk today?

The players had said on Thursday night that they would come back today to discuss the government's proposals but have not yet come. Vinesh Phogat wore sponsor's dress instead of team dress in Tokyo Olympics. On this, he was scolded by the Wrestling Association and the Indian Olympic Association. But the wrestling association did not take disciplinary action against him on this issue.

According to sources, the government wants the players' protest to end soon as there are not many days left in the Republic Day programme. The government clarified that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has no right to be sacked because Brij Bhushan is the president of an elected body.
