Zelenskyy Accuses Russia: 47 Nations' Citizens Used in War, Including Indians

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has leveled serious allegations against Russia during his address at the United Nations General Assembly, while according to the Ukrainian leader, Moscow is employing fraudulent methods and trickery to recruit citizens from 47 different nations to fight in its ongoing military campaign against Ukraine. This revelation came during the 81st session of the UNGA, where Zelenskyy highlighted the global scale of Russia's recruitment efforts, which he claims are built on deception.

The Global Reach of Russian Recruitment

Zelenskyy specifically named several countries whose citizens have been found on the battlefield. He stated that Russia is utilizing people from nations such as Ghana, Nepal, Tajikistan, India, Yemen, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Belarus, Sudan, and South Africa, among many others. The President emphasized that these individuals often end up in the conflict zone not by choice, but because they were misled by Russian authorities. He pointed out that the international community is witnessing the deaths of non-Russian citizens on the front lines, individuals who reached Russia through various forms of manipulation.

A Plea to International Representatives

Addressing the representatives of the 47 countries involved, Zelenskyy urged them to take immediate action to protect their citizens. He called on these nations to prevent their people from being dragged into the Russia-Ukraine war. The Ukrainian President highlighted that Vladimir Putin is constantly searching for more people to help him kill others and capture more territory. He stated that for every kilometer of land, Putin is willing to sacrifice more lives, choosing expansion and occupation over the governance of his own country.

The Indian Context and Casualties

The situation regarding Indian citizens in the Russian military has been a point of significant concern. According to data provided by the Ministry of External Affairs, the Russian army had recruited 227 Indian nationals. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri shared updates earlier this month, stating that out of these 227 individuals, 139 have been discharged from service. However, the human cost has been high, with 51 Indian citizens reported dead. Vikram Misri confirmed that New Delhi is currently in negotiations with Moscow to ensure the release and safe return of the remaining Indians still held in the Russian military system.

Targeting Russia's War Economy

Beyond the human recruitment aspect, Zelenskyy also called for increased pressure on Russia's ability to fund its military operations. He specifically pointed toward the Russian oil industry, which he claimed is already under significant pressure, while zelenskyy clarified that Ukraine's objective wasn't merely to target oil, fuel supplies, factories, or ports for the sake of destruction. Instead, he explained that Kyiv's strategy is to diminish Moscow's capacity to generate revenue that sustains the war effort, while he urged the global community to limit Putin's scope of action, his financial resources, and his ability to continue the conflict.
