Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Three days after the horrific crash of Air India's AI171 flight from Ahmedabad to London, officials on Sunday informed that so far 47 dead have been identified through DNA testing, and 24 bodies have been handed over to their families. The accident took place on June 12 at 1:39 pm, when the Boeing 787-8 aircraft lost control a few minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and crashed into a medical college campus in Meghaninagar.297 dead, British citizen the only survivorAt the time of the accident, there were 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board the plane. Only one 40-year-old British citizen survived the accident, all the rest died. Many people on the ground were also killed in this accident, including five MBBS students. A total of 297 people have been confirmed dead so far.DNA testing became a support in identifying the bodiesAfter the incident, many bodies were so damaged or burnt that their identification was not possible through traditional methods. In such a situation, the administration started the DNA matching process. According to Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajneesh Patel, "So far 47 bodies have been confirmed by DNA, out of which 24 have been handed over to the families. The deceased were from different districts of Rajasthan and Gujarat."Relief and rescue operations continueRescue and relief operations are going on on a war footing since the accident. Gujarat Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said that the families of the deceased are being identified and proper assistance, insurance process and certificates are being given to them. He said, "The families of the deceased live in 22 districts, 22 death certificates have been handed over. 22 special teams have been formed to ensure that there is no hindrance in the insurance claim."Security and police arrangements are tightSecurity is tight around the hospital and the incident site. Police officer Jaipal ji informed that 7 IPS officers are present in the area and security is in place 24 hours a day.Information from Dr. Rajneesh PatelAccording to Dr. Patel, 44 families have been informed and a special team has been appointed on each case to deliver each body to its relatives. He also informed that currently only 13 people are admitted in the hospital, all the rest have been discharged.This accident has not only become one of the biggest tragedies in aviation history, but has also left permanent grief in the lives of hundreds of families.
